What is a Notary Public?

A Notary Public is an officer commissioned by the Secretary of State to witness and authenticate signatures on important legal and business documents like deeds, mortgages, and powers of attorney. As a notary, we are trained to properly verify identities and prevent fraud.

What is an Apostille?

An Apostille is an authentication issued by the Secretary of State for international use of public documents like birth certificates, death certificates, academic records, and notarized signatures. The Apostille certifies that the notary signature is genuine and the document is issued by an authority in the U.S. state it originates from.

What are the different types of notarizations in Massachusetts?

The main types of notarizations include acknowledgements, jurats, and signature witnessing.

An acknowledgement verifies the identity of the signer and that they willingly signed the document.

A jurat includes a written oath or affirmation from the signer.

Signature witnessing simply verifies the identity of the signer and that they signed in front of the notary.

What are acceptable forms of ID for my appointment?

We require government-issued photo IDs for all notarizations. Acceptable primary forms of ID include a valid driver's license, passport, military ID or other state/federal ID card. Secondary IDs may also be requested and can include a social security card, birth certificate or student ID along with a photo ID.
