How Bentley documents work

Bentley's Registrar authenticates student records for the apostille using a Student Records Authentication Form. For a transcript, you order the transcript and send the form. For a diploma, Bentley asks for the original diploma, which it returns to you, and sends a notarized copy to the Secretary of the Commonwealth. The apostille then comes back to you. Bentley notes that apostilles can take up to six weeks, so it asks graduates to plan ahead.

Bentley also issues CeDiplomas and notes an apostille may not be necessary for one. If your recipient does want an apostille, and six weeks is too long, we can help. Some institutions will accept a certified copy of your academic record. In those cases, we can come to you, notarize the document and provide an expedited apostille. Please confirm this option is acceptable with the recipient first. Otherwise, we partner with the school to ensure international acceptance.

How your Bentley University record gets notarized

Massachusetts will apostille an academic record notarized with any of its four notarial acts: acknowledgment, jurat (affidavit), signature witnessing or copy certification. Which one you need is usually set by whoever receives your documents, so we confirm their requirements before we start.

School official acknowledgment

A Bentley University official signs your diploma, transcript or verification letter before the notary, and the notarial certificate names the official, their title and the school. Ministries of education and universities abroad often require this.

School official affidavit

The Bentley University Registrar signs a separate sworn statement confirming your graduation and that the attached records match the school's files, and the notary notarizes it. Spain's Ministry of Education, for example, accepts only this or an acknowledgment. See our Spain guide.

Certified copy, only if your recipient accepts it

As the owner of your diploma, you present the original and we notarize a certified copy, then get the apostille in 1–2 business days. Many recipients won't accept a copy certification, so please confirm with yours first.

Prepared right the first time

We coordinate with the Bentley University Registrar, prepare the notarial certificate with the details your recipient requires, and file with the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. For the school-certified routes, you don't need to come to Boston.

Mistakes Bentley graduates avoid

  • Sending an electronic transcript. A PDF can't carry a Massachusetts apostille. It needs to be a notarized paper record.
  • Using a bank notary. A notary can't confirm that a university record is genuine on their own. The notarization needs to involve your registrar.
  • Getting an apostille for a non-Hague country. The UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and others need embassy legalization instead.
  • Forgetting the translation. Many countries won't accept English-only records. We add certified translation to the same order.
  • A name that doesn't match your passport. If your name has changed since graduation, tell us early.
  • Shipping your diploma in a frame. Bentley asks for the diploma in its binder for protection.

Planning your timeline

Bentley's process can take up to six weeks. If you need your documents sooner, tell us your deadline. Once a notarized record is in our hands, the apostille is typically ready in 1–2 business days, plus shipping.

Official sources

Each registrar sets its own forms, timelines and fees, and can change them at any time. We link to official pages so you can check the current process yourself.

Where we meet you

Bentley is in Waltham, and we meet students and alumni there and across the western suburbs. We come to you anywhere in Greater Boston, or you can mail us your documents from anywhere in the world.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bentley keep my original diploma?

No. Bentley returns your original and sends a notarized copy to the state. You provide the shipping.

Do I need an apostille on my CeDiploma?

Bentley notes it may not be necessary. Check with your recipient first.

Can my digital or electronic diploma be apostilled?

Usually not as it is. A certified electronic diploma is a secure file that the recipient verifies online, and some recipients accept it directly, so ask them first. For an apostille, Massachusetts needs a notarized paper document: usually a notarized copy of your diploma, a notarized transcript or a notarized degree verification letter. Tell us what your recipient asked for and we’ll confirm the right route.
