Exchanging your license abroad

License offices abroad usually want more than the driving record. Expect to bring your current license, your passport and proof of residence, and many offices want an official translation of the record. Some also want the record issued within a recent window, so order it close to your appointment.

We put the pieces together in one order: the apostilled record, a certified translation in the language the office needs, and notarized copies of your license or passport if they’re requested. Already abroad? Have the record sent to us, and we’ll ship the finished set to you anywhere in the world.

Licensed in another state? Your record comes from that state’s motor vehicle agency and gets that state’s apostille, which we arrange through our 50-state apostille service.

Who needs a driving record apostille

License exchange abroad

Many countries let you swap a U.S. license for a local one if you show an apostilled driving record.

Car insurance overseas

Insurers abroad may give credit for your U.S. driving history when it’s apostilled.

Visas and residency

Some visa and residence applications ask for an official driving record.

Driving jobs abroad

Employers hiring drivers abroad often ask for an apostilled record.

Avoid these common delays

  • Ordering the unattested version. Only a true and attested or full certified record can be apostilled.
  • Old records. Recipients often want a recently issued record. Order it close to your filing date.
  • Missing translation. Ask the license office whether it needs a translation, and we’ll coordinate it.
  • Separated pages. Keep the record exactly as the RMV sends it.

Frequently asked questions

Can any copy of my driving record be apostilled?

No. You need a certified (true and attested) driving record from the Massachusetts RMV. An unattested record you download or print yourself can’t be apostilled.

Which RMV record should I order?

Most recipients accept the true and attested driving record. Some ask for a full certified driving history, which also includes RMV correspondence. Check what your recipient asked for, and we’ll confirm.

Can the RMV send the record straight to you?

The RMV’s request forms let you authorize release to another person or address. Ask us for the details with your quote, and we’ll tell you how to route it to us.

Why would I need a driving record apostilled?

Common reasons include exchanging a U.S. license for a local one abroad, applying for car insurance overseas, visa applications and driving jobs abroad.

Do I need an International Driving Permit instead?

An International Driving Permit is a translation of your license for short visits. License exchanges, insurers and visa offices usually want the apostilled driving record itself. Check what your recipient asked for.

Can you translate the record too?

Yes. As an American Translators Association Corporate Member, we provide certified translations and coordinate them with the apostille.

How recent does my driving record need to be?

It depends on the office abroad. Many want a record issued within the last few months, so order it close to your appointment and tell us your date when you start.

My license is from another state. Can you help?

Yes. We handle documents from any U.S. state. The record comes from that state’s motor vehicle agency and is apostilled by that state; see our 50-state apostille guide.

My country isn’t in the Apostille Convention. Can you still help?

Yes. The record gets a Massachusetts certification instead, then U.S. Department of State authentication and embassy legalization. We handle every step.

Need your driving record apostilled?

Tell us your destination country, and we’ll walk you through every step.
