EGYPT AT A GLANCE
Not a Hague Convention member
An apostille alone won't be accepted.
- State certification
- U.S. Department of State authentication
- Ethiopia embassy legalization
- Amharic translation if required
Why Ethiopia needs legalization
Documents we legalize for Ethiopia
- Marriage, birth, divorce and death certificates
- Single status affidavits for marriage in Ethiopia
- Powers of attorney for property, inheritance and banking
- Diplomas and transcripts
- FBI background checks
- Corporate documents, commercial invoices and certificates of origin
The legalization chain, step by step
- 1
Notarization or certified copy
Signed documents are notarized first; vital records and court records start as certified copies. We come to you for notarization anywhere in Greater Boston.
- 2
State certification
The Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, or the issuing state, certifies the document. FBI checks and other federal documents skip this step.
- 3
U.S. Department of State authentication
Handled in Washington, DC through our DC Satellite Office.
- 4
Embassy authentication
The Embassy of Ethiopia authenticates the document through Ethiopia’s Digital MoFA system, after the U.S. Department of State step.
- 5
Translation and delivery
Amharic translation if the receiving office requires it, then tracked shipping, to you or directly abroad.
Every request is quoted individually, with government, embassy and chamber fees listed separately. Embassy timelines vary and can change without notice, so we give you a realistic estimate when you request a quote.

How long Ethiopia legalization takes
| Step | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Notarization appointment | Within 24 hours, often the same day |
| Massachusetts certification | 1–2 business days |
| U.S. Department of State authentication | About 2 weeks through our DC Satellite Office |
| Ethiopia embassy authentication | Submitted online through Ethiopia’s Digital MoFA system; we confirm current timing with your quote |
| Amharic translation, if required | Usually 3 business days, with rush available |
Most Ethiopia legalizations take about 3 to 5 weeks from the day we receive your documents. Embassy timelines can change without notice, so we confirm current timing with your quote.
Ethiopia now authenticates online
Since April 2, 2026, the Embassy of Ethiopia in Washington no longer authenticates documents or powers of attorney in person. Requests go through Ethiopia’s Digital MoFA system, and U.S. documents must be authenticated by the U.S. Department of State first. See digital MoFA legalization for how it works.
Documents from other states and federal agencies
Your document doesn’t have to come from Massachusetts. We handle documents from any U.S. state: we arrange the certification from the state that issued it, then complete the federal and Ethiopia steps. Federal documents such as FBI background checks skip the state step and go straight to the U.S. Department of State.

Avoid these common delays
- Getting an apostille instead. Ethiopia isn’t in the Apostille Convention, so a state apostille won’t be accepted. The state has to issue a certification.
- Old certified copies. If a vital record is more than 12 months old, confirm with the recipient in Ethiopia that they’ll accept it.
- Names that don’t match. The name on each document should match the passport the Ethiopia office will compare it with.
- Translation in the wrong order. Some offices want the Amharic translation legalized too. We confirm the order before we start.
- Separated pages. Never remove staples or pages from a notarized or certified document.
