What Italy usually requires
| Document | Where the apostille comes from | What else to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Massachusetts birth, marriage or death certificate | Secretary of the Commonwealth | Long-form certified copy; Italian translation |
| Records from another state | That state's Secretary of State | We handle all 50 states |
| FBI background check | U.S. Department of State | Usually must be recent; Italian translation |
| Power of attorney | Secretary of the Commonwealth, after notarization | Ask your Italian notaio about format and language |
| Naturalization records | Depends on the record (often federal) | Ask us; these vary |
Requirements change and can differ by consulate, city and purpose. Always confirm the exact requirements with the office receiving your documents. We're happy to review what they sent you.
How we handle it
- 1
Tell us what the recipient asked for
Send us the list or the email from the consulate, school, employer or attorney. We review it and confirm exactly what each document needs.
- 2
We prepare each document
Certified copies, notarization by appointment, or retrieval of records you don't have yet.
- 3
Apostilles from the right offices
Massachusetts documents go to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, other states' documents to that state, and federal documents, like FBI checks, to the U.S. Department of State.
- 4
Italian translation and shipping
We arrange certified translation when it's needed, then ship everything back with tracking, to you or directly abroad.
Good to know
Long-form copies matter
Italian offices usually want full, long-form certified copies that show parents' names. Short-form abstracts are often rejected.
Names must match
Spelling differences between generations (Giuseppe vs. Joseph) can cause delays. Ask your consulate how they want them handled.
Translate the apostille too
Many Italian offices want the apostille itself translated along with the document.
Need records first?
We can order Massachusetts certified copies for you. See Vital Records Retrieval.
Common reasons clients need documents for Italy
Citizenship by descent
Birth, marriage, death and naturalization records across generations. Italy narrowed eligibility in 2025, so confirm you qualify first. See Citizenship by Descent.
Marrying in Italy
An apostilled birth certificate with an Italian translation, plus the sworn declarations the Italian town hall asks for.
Elective residence and work visas
FBI checks, financial letters and other documents, apostilled and translated.
Property and inheritance
Powers of attorney so an Italian notary or relative can act for you. See Powers of Attorney.
Study in Italy
Diplomas and transcripts for Italian universities. See Universities.
Business
Corporate documents for Italian partners and registrations. See Corporate Documents.
Mistakes that delay Italian files
- Short-form birth certificates. Italian consulates and comuni usually want long-form records showing parents' names.
- Missing apostilles on records from other states. Each record is apostilled by the state that issued it.
- Translating before the apostille. Translations often need to cover the apostille too.
- Name differences across generations. Spelling changes are common. Some consulates want them explained or corrected.
- Powers of attorney without the Italian notary's wording. Ask the notaio or attorney in Italy for the text first.

What clients say
Boston Mobile Notary was incredibly helpful to my mother and my family in getting some important documents signed and notarized. They were responsive, prompt, professional, and courteous. In these days where banks, hospitals, and nursing homes limit what they'll notarize, Boston Mobile Notary was a life-saver and gave all of us peace of mind. We are very, very pleased with their service!
I had a great experience with the service from start to finish. They were very easy to reach online and always responded quickly whenever I had questions or needed clarification. The whole process was straightforward and well explained, and they made sure I understood everything I needed to know. Communication and confirmations were also very clear throughout. I used their apostille service for a document that needed to be sent overseas, and they took care of everything for me. The entire process was quick, smooth, and hassle-free, which I really appreciated. Overall, I’m very happy with the service and would definitely come back in the future if I have any other documents or paperwork that need notarization or apostille. Highly recommend!
I unreservedly recommend Boston Mobile Notary & Apostille Service. The service was helpful, professional and exactly what I required. The Notary showed exactly on time, explained everything well and was very friendly. Great experience!
