Italian citizenship files, start to finish

Many of our Italian translations are for families building a citizenship file: birth, marriage and death certificates for each generation, naturalization records and sometimes court orders correcting names. Each U.S. record needs a certified copy, an apostille and an Italian translation, and many consulates and comuni also want the translation itself apostilled. We can order the records, get the apostilles and prepare the translations in one coordinated order, so the file is consistent from the first generation to yours.

When names don’t match across generations

Italian ancestors’ names were often anglicized after arrival, so a great-grandfather may be Giuseppe on an Italian birth record and Joseph on U.S. census, marriage and naturalization papers. Dates and places can also differ. Consulates can treat these as problems, so we translate each record exactly as written and flag differences early. Some can be explained with a one-and-the-same affidavit, and others need a court order correcting the record. Your consulate or an Italian attorney can tell you which.

How to order a Italian translation

  • Send clear scans or photos of every page, front and back
  • Tell us who will receive the translation: USCIS, a court, a school or a foreign office
  • Tell us the spelling of names you use on your passport
  • Tell us your deadline
  • We translate the full document and attach a signed certification

Need an apostille or notarization too? We add it to the same order.
