How DC apostilles work

The District of Columbia has its own authentication office, the Office of Notary Commissions and Authentications within the DC Office of the Secretary. It issues apostilles for documents signed by DC officials or notarized by DC notaries, and a separate certificate for countries outside the Hague Convention. It doesn't authenticate documents notarized in other states, and it doesn't handle federal documents, which go to the U.S. Department of State.

DC documents we apostille

  • DC birth, marriage and death certificates
  • DC divorce and court records
  • Diplomas and transcripts from DC universities
  • Documents notarized by DC notaries
  • DC corporate and nonprofit documents

Federal documents from agencies in Washington follow a different route. See Federal Documents.

Why our DC Satellite Office matters

Most apostille services outside Washington mail DC documents and hope for the best. Our DC Satellite Office lets us handle DC filings and the federal and embassy steps in person, so documents spend less time in the mail and you get clearer updates. That's especially useful for clients with documents from several places, such as a DC document, a Massachusetts record and an FBI check, all going to the same country.

Mistakes we help you avoid

  • Sending a document notarized outside DC. The DC office only authenticates DC notaries and DC officials.
  • Treating federal documents as DC documents. Federal agencies in Washington aren't authenticated by DC. They go to the U.S. Department of State. See Federal Documents.
  • Uncertified copies. DC public records need certified copies from the issuing office.
  • Skipping the embassy step. Non-Hague countries need legalization after DC authentication.
