How documents for the UK work

The United Kingdom has been part of the Hague Apostille Convention since 1965. When a UK office, solicitor or bank asks for a U.S. document to be "legalised" or authenticated, an apostille from the state that issued it, or from the U.S. Department of State for federal documents, is usually what they mean. Many UK requests don't need an apostille at all, so confirm with your solicitor or the receiving office first. Since U.S. documents are in English, translation usually isn't needed.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • Assuming everything needs an apostille. Many UK requests don't. Ask your solicitor.
  • Sending a photocopy. An apostille needs a certified copy or a properly notarized document.
  • Ignoring your solicitor's instructions. UK solicitors often specify exactly how a document must be signed and witnessed.
  • Uncertified court documents. Divorce and probate documents must be certified by the court.
  • A state apostille on an FBI check. FBI checks need the federal apostille.

Working with UK solicitors and companies

UK solicitors and company service providers often send detailed signing instructions, sometimes asking for a notary to confirm identity or witness a signature in a particular way. Forward us the instructions, and we'll follow them exactly, notarize at your home or office, apostille where required and ship the originals by tracked courier to your solicitor in London, Edinburgh or wherever they are based.

What to have ready

  • The document, unsigned if it needs notarizing
