Vietnam now accepts apostilles

The Apostille Convention entered into force for Vietnam on September 11, 2026. Before that, U.S. documents needed authentication by the U.S. Department of State and legalization by a Vietnamese embassy or consulate. Now, an apostille from the state that issued the document, or from the U.S. Department of State for federal documents, is usually all that's needed. Because the change is recent, some offices may still be updating their instructions, so confirm with your employer, lawyer or the receiving office before you start.

Good to know

A recent change

If someone in Vietnam asks for embassy legalization, check whether an apostille now satisfies their requirement.

Work permits

Degrees and background checks are the most common requests. See Universities and FBI Apostille.

Businesses

See Corporate Documents.

Translation

Vietnamese translations are often notarized in Vietnam. Ask your lawyer.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • Paying for legalization you may not need. Since September 2026, an apostille is usually enough. Confirm with the office.
  • A state apostille on an FBI check. FBI checks need the federal apostille.
  • An electronic transcript. PDFs usually can't be apostilled as is.
  • Names that don't match. Vietnamese names are ordered differently. Bring documents that link them.
