Common reasons clients need them

Medical licensure, residency or employment abroad; nursing registration overseas; teaching positions at international schools; and admission to practice law in another country. Some boards send verifications directly to the foreign authority instead, so we confirm which your destination accepts before we start.

Why license verifications need special handling

Most licensing boards let professionals print a verification online, but a self-generated PDF usually can't be apostilled, because an apostille certifies an official's signature. For use abroad, you typically need a verification letter or certificate of good standing signed by the board, or a certified copy of your license, issued in a form the Secretary of the Commonwealth will authenticate. Massachusetts boards, such as the Board of Registration in Medicine, offer verification letters by mail for this purpose. We tell you exactly which version to order, then handle the apostille or legalization.

Mistakes that get license apostilles rejected

  • An online printout. Self-generated verifications usually can't be apostilled. Order a signed letter from the board instead.
  • A wallet card or photocopy of your license. These usually can't be apostilled either. Ask the board for a certified copy or letter.
  • A license from another state. Each state's board document is apostilled by that state, and we coordinate it.
  • Assuming every country accepts an apostille. Countries outside the Hague Convention need embassy legalization. See Embassy Legalization.
  • Letters that are too old. Many foreign councils require recently issued verifications.
