What a self-attested document is

A self-attested copy is a copy of your own document, such as a passport, driver's license or utility bill, that you sign to declare it is a true copy of the original. Self-attestation is standard practice in India and is required by many other countries and foreign institutions. When the document is going abroad, a signature alone is usually not enough: the receiving authority wants the self-attestation notarized and, for countries in the Apostille Convention, apostilled. In Massachusetts, this is done with a written self-attestation statement that you sign in front of a notary, who completes a notarial certificate for your signature. The Secretary of the Commonwealth then apostilles the notary's signature for the destination country.

  • Passport copies, including the photo and address pages
  • Driver's licenses and other government photo IDs
  • Proof of address, such as a recent utility bill or bank statement
  • Diplomas, transcripts and professional certificates
  • Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) and PAN cards
  • Employment letters and pay records

A real example: an Indian subsidiary director appointment

A technology company appointed its Massachusetts-based chief executive as a director of its Indian subsidiary. The Indian law firm's checklist called for a self-attested passport copy and a self-attested proof of address, each notarized and apostilled, together with a completed signature verification form. The company's draft self-attestation statements contained incorrect dates and both described the same document, so we prepared corrected statements on site, notarized each one at the executive's home, obtained a separate apostille for each document and sent scans for the company's review before shipping the originals. The documents were confirmed as acceptable for the authorities in India. The lesson: share the destination's full checklist, and the statements themselves, before the appointment so every date and description can be checked in advance.

How we handle it

  1. 1

Send us the checklist and the documents

PDF attachments are best. We review the requirements, the copies and any draft statements, and flag anything that needs correcting.

  2. 2

    We prepare the self-attestation statements

Each statement identifies the specific document, its number or date and the signer, with the wording the recipient expects.

  3. 3

Notarization at your home or office

You sign each statement in front of a Massachusetts notary anywhere in Greater Boston, and we complete the notarial certificates.

  4. 4

    Apostille and delivery

We file each document with the Secretary of the Commonwealth, email scans for review, and ship the originals worldwide with tracking.

Good to know

One apostille per document

Each notarized self-attested copy receives its own apostille, issued for the destination country.

Use a recent proof of address

Many authorities want a utility bill or bank statement issued within the last two or three months.

Names must match

The name on the statement, the copy and your identification should match exactly. Tell us about any variations at the start.

India apostilles

India is a member of the Apostille Convention, so a Massachusetts apostille completes the authentication. See Apostille for India.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • Signing "self-attested" on a photocopy and stopping there. Documents for use abroad usually need notarization and an apostille as well.
  • Statements with the wrong date or document. Each statement must describe the specific document it covers.
  • Restricted file links. Send documents as attachments, so they can be reviewed and printed before the appointment.
  • An old utility bill. Check how recent the proof of address must be.
  • Missing the signature verification form. Indian company filings often require one alongside the self-attested copies.

Frequently asked questions

What does "self-attested" mean?

It means you sign a copy of your own document to declare that it is a true copy of the original. For use abroad, the self-attestation is usually notarized and apostilled.

Can a self-attested copy be apostilled in Massachusetts?

Yes. You sign a self-attestation statement in front of a Massachusetts notary, and the Secretary of the Commonwealth apostilles the notary's signature.

Do you prepare the self-attestation statement?

Yes. We can prepare it to match the recipient's checklist, or review the wording you have been given.

Is this the same as a certified copy?

Not quite. In a copy certification, the notary certifies the copy. In a self-attestation, you declare the copy is true, and the notary notarizes your signature. The recipient decides which it accepts.

Can you come to my home or office?

Yes. We come to you anywhere in Greater Boston, including for executives and multiple signers.
