What a no record of marriage certificate is

When you marry abroad, the foreign authority usually wants proof that you are free to marry. The United States has no national marriage register, so there is no single document that proves this. One of the strongest forms of evidence is a certificate of no record of marriage from the Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics, which confirms that no marriage is recorded for you in Massachusetts for the period searched. Because it is issued by a state vital records office, it can be apostilled by the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth, and many countries accept it on its own or together with a notarized single status affidavit.

When clients need one

  • Registering a marriage in Vietnam, the Philippines, China or other countries
  • Fiancé and marriage visas abroad
  • Proving single status for residency or family reunification
  • Religious and civil ceremonies that require evidence of freedom to marry
  • Supporting a single status affidavit when the foreign office wants an official record

A real example: Vietnam

A client planning to marry in Vietnam was asked for official evidence of single status. We obtained a Massachusetts No Record of Marriage certificate, had it apostilled by the Secretary of the Commonwealth for use in Vietnam and shipped it overnight with a scan for his records. Vietnam began accepting apostilles on September 11, 2026, so documents for Vietnam now need only the apostille, with no embassy legalization step. See Apostille for Vietnam.
