How documents for Ecuador work

Ecuador has been a member of the Hague Apostille Convention since April 2, 2005, so U.S. documents need an apostille from the office that issued them rather than consular legalization. Most documents used by Ecuadorian authorities must also be in Spanish. Ecuadorian law accepts translations made outside a court when the translator's signature is authenticated, for example by a notary or consul of Ecuador, and many applicants have the translation completed and recognized in Ecuador. We prepare, apostille and coordinate each document so it is ready for your attorney or the receiving office.

Documents we prepare for Ecuador

  • FBI background checks for residency, with the federal apostille
  • Birth and marriage certificates for applicants and dependents
  • Pension, income and bank letters for residency applications
  • Single status affidavits and divorce decrees for marriage
  • Powers of attorney for property, banking and legal matters
  • Diplomas and transcripts for employment and degree recognition

How we handle it

  1. 1

    Share the recipient's requirements

Send us the checklist or email you received from the authority, consulate, employer, attorney or bank. We confirm exactly what each document needs before any work begins.

  2. 2

    We prepare each document

Certified copies, notarization by appointment anywhere in Greater Boston, or retrieval of records you do not yet have, such as Massachusetts vital records.

  3. 3

    Apostilles from the right offices

Massachusetts documents go to the Secretary of the Commonwealth, documents from other states to the issuing state, and federal documents, such as FBI background checks, to the U.S. Department of State.

  4. 4

    Translation and delivery

We advise on translation for your receiving office, arrange certified translation where it is accepted, and ship the finished set with tracking.

Spanish translation for Ecuador

Translation is the step most likely to need local coordination. Some Ecuadorian offices accept a translation prepared in the United States, particularly when the translator's signature is authenticated as Ecuadorian law allows, while others expect the translation to be completed or recognized in Ecuador. We confirm what your receiving office requires before anything is translated. We provide certified Spanish translation through our American Translators Association corporate membership, or ship the apostilled originals to your attorney or translator in Ecuador. See Spanish Translation.

Good to know

Residency and retirement

Applications commonly call for an apostilled FBI background check and family records. See FBI Background Checks.

Marriage in Ecuador

Plan for apostilled birth certificates and evidence of single status. See Getting Married Abroad.

Powers of attorney

Common for property and family matters handled by a relative or attorney in Ecuador. See Powers of Attorney.

Records from other states

Each record is apostilled by the state that issued it. See Documents From Other States.

Common mistakes we help you avoid

  • A state apostille on an FBI check. FBI checks are federal documents and require the U.S. Department of State apostille.
  • Photocopies of official records. Vital records must be certified copies from the issuing office.
  • Translating before the apostille. Translations often need to include the apostille itself.
  • Records from several states. Each record is apostilled by the state that issued it. We coordinate them in one order.
