How a nursing license verification is apostilled
Verification options and whether they can be apostilled
| Document | Can it be apostilled? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Online license lookup or Nursys printout | No | No original official signature |
| Written verification letter from the Board, signed by an official on file with the Secretary of the Commonwealth | Yes | Apostilled directly |
| Written verification letter signed by a Board official who is not on file | Yes, once notarized | The official signs in front of a notary, and the notary's signature is apostilled |
| Photocopy or wallet card of your license | Generally not used | Request a written verification from the Board instead |
| Verification sent by the Board directly to the overseas regulator | Not needed | Some regulators require direct, primary-source verification and no apostille |
Requirements differ by regulator. Always follow the instructions from the overseas regulator or employer, and we will confirm the format before the Board issues your letter.

Who we help
- Registered nurses and nurse practitioners registering with overseas regulators
- Travel nurses and nurses relocating with a spouse or family
- Nurses joining international hospital groups and humanitarian organizations
- Nurse educators and researchers taking positions at universities abroad
- Licensed practical nurses and allied health professionals
- Healthcare recruiters coordinating credentials for several nurses
How we handle it
- 1
Review the regulator's instructions
We confirm whether your destination wants an apostilled verification, a direct verification from the Board, or both, and which other documents it expects.
- 2
Request the verification from the Board
You submit a written request to the Board of Registration in Nursing with the required fee, and we advise on the wording so the letter is issued in a form that can be apostilled.
- 3
Notarization when needed
If the signing official is not on file with the Secretary of the Commonwealth, the letter is signed before a notary. This is the same approach we use for physician license verifications from the Board of Registration in Medicine.
- 4
Apostille, translation and delivery
We file the letter with the Secretary of the Commonwealth, add certified translation when required, and ship worldwide with tracking.

Common mistakes we help you avoid
- Submitting a Nursys or online printout. It has no official signature and cannot be apostilled.
- A letter signed by an official who is not on file, without notarization. The Secretary of the Commonwealth cannot authenticate it.
- Apostilling when the regulator wants direct verification. Some regulators only accept verification sent by the Board itself.
- Forgetting licenses from other states. Overseas regulators often ask for verification from every state where you have held a license.
- Starting late. Board processing, notarization and the apostille all take time. Begin as soon as your application opens.

Frequently asked questions
Can a Nursys verification be apostilled?
No. A Nursys or online printout has no original official signature, so it cannot be apostilled. Request a written verification from the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.
What makes a Board letter eligible for an apostille?
It must be signed by an official whose signature is on file with the Secretary of the Commonwealth, or signed by the official in front of a notary, so the apostille can authenticate the notary's signature.
Do overseas regulators always want an apostille?
No. Some require the Board to send verification directly. Follow your regulator's instructions, and we will confirm what is needed.
I held licenses in other states. Do I need those too?
Often, yes. Each state's board issues its own verification, which is apostilled by that state. We coordinate them in one order.
Can you translate the verification?
Yes. We provide certified translation through our American Translators Association corporate membership when the destination requires it.
Registering as a nurse abroad?
Send us your regulator's instructions, and we will make sure your verification is issued and apostilled correctly.
